Prefects & Head Students

Prefects are students that have been given extra responsibilities and authority at Hogwarts. Each year new prefects are chosen from the incoming fifth year students. They receive a letter from the school informing them of their new position, and are also given a badge to wear. Once appointed, Prefects usually continue in the role up until they graduate, unless they are appointed Head Boy or Girl.

Typically one male and one female student from each house is chosen each year. However, we welcome the inclusion of non-binary individuals, as well as transgender students and those who identify otherwise than in accordance with traditional roles. For this reason, we have removed the gendered descriptors from prefect roles below. Each house/year pairing, however, should be made up of two students who identify with different genders. For instance, a male/non-binary or male/female pairing would both be possible, whereas a male/male pairing would not.

Prefects have duties which include showing first years to their dormitories, patrolling the castle after curfew, and maintaining order in their common rooms. They are allowed to take points from students but cannot take points from another Prefect. They are also given the authority to issue detentions.

Head Students are responsible for organising prefect rotas, liaising with the Headmaster to represent student opinion, and supervising some detentions. They have all the same powers as Prefects, and are additionally permitted to take points from Prefects.
